NOSTALGICA DESFRUNZIRE
NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING
A-ți aminti, TOAMNA, înseamnă
a privi inima cum se desfrunzește,
lăsând Verile să cadă înapoi pe pământ.
To remember during AUTUMN
is to watch the heart unleaf,
letting the Summers fall back to earth.
Deci
a venit şi toamna cu palele-i tristeţi
Şi curg încete frunze
şi-s paşii mei înceţi,
Pe-arginturile minţii tresaltă
întrebări,
Cum joacă pe icoană lumini de lumânări.
(N. Labiș)
And
so arrived my Autumn, with its somber sighs…
The leaves slowly
drift, as my own pacing dies;
Upon my silvered mind, questions
start to flare,
Like candlelight dancing
on icons in prayer.
În TRECUT, sunt deprimat;
PREFACE
NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING is the third volume in the PASSING SEASONS cycle, after LUNAtic LOVE (I) and THE WONDROUS PATH TO LIFE (II). The cycle will conclude with the volume CHIAROSCURO WINTERING (IV).
These quatrains confirm that NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING is neither simply a book about aging nor merely a book of memories. It is a poetic meditation on:
• the seasons as mirrors of inner life,
• the persistence of longing,
• the survival of love through memory, dreams, and reality,
• the tension between bodily decline and spiritual vitality,
• the wish to transform even mortality into beauty.
The poet does not merely endure Autumn; he learns to read life through it. Leaves, frost, dusk, snow, and the circling Earth become emblems of a consciousness that remains tender, alert, and imaginative even while approaching its final Season.
The author is continually drawn toward two worlds: toward what was—through longing, memory, and dreams—and toward what may come—through the anxieties and hope. Yet “carpe diem” repeatedly restores the balance:
In the PAST, I am depressed;/ In the FUTURE, I am stressed; Living only in the PRESENT / Is life’s sweetest compliment.
Nostalgic Unleafing evokes the bittersweet shedding of the past, much as trees shed their leaves in Autumn. It becomes a metaphor for passing time, memory, and the gentle ache of growing older. It also suggests a poetic parting: a reflection on what has been, what has been lost, and how transient moments are carried forward.
These quatrains envision the dimensions of memory and loss:
• The Autumnal Metaphor: falling leaves stand for vanished summers, youthful innocence, and the inevitable passage of time.
• Reflective Longing: the past is acknowledged without a desperate attempt to recreate it; instead, memory is contemplated in its quiet beauty.
• The Weight of Growth: sorrow and sweetness spring from the same root as the heart matures.

Toamna
- aduce poezie,
Dans de frunze, frenezie;
A Verii b i o c
h i m i e
Se transformă-n nostalgie !¡
Autumn
brings me poetry,
Leaves in dance and frenzy free;
Summer’s
living chemistry
Turns to wistful memory!
Câte
vise14-n nostalgie
S-or preface-n poezie?
Câte
visuri14, câte patimi...
S-or preface-n stropi de
lacrimi?
How
many dreams14 that longing brings
Will turn to poetry
and sing?
How many daydreams14, passions,
fears...
Will melt away in drops of tears?
– Dă-mi,
Doamne, dacă se poate,
Prin mărinimia milei,
O cântare-n
vis de noapte,
Să-mi spargă tăcerea zilei !..
– Grant
me, Lord, if it may be,
In boundless mercy, hear me pray,
A
song in dreams to come to me,
And break the silence of my day
!..
Nu
- i izvor de poezie
Un gând ce n-a ars pe rug
Și n - a
băut apă vie ‒
Dorul iubirii, din zori în amurg ¡!
No
thought can flow as poetry
Unless it burned upon the pyre,
And
drank the living water free—
Love’s longing, dawn to sunset
fire!
E
pustiu Toamna pe-alee...
Nu-s nici muze
Să m -
amuze,
Că s-au ascuns în muzee !?
Autumn
leaves the alley bare;
No Muse remains to charm me there;
Have
all the Muses fled the air
To hide in museums somewhere?
O
cântare fără Muză
E-o pădure fără frunză !
Sufletu,
de dor golit,
E un suflet pustiit !?
A
song without a guiding Muse
Is like a forest stripped and
bare;
A soul whose longing it must lose
Is but a wasteland
of despair!?
─ Pădure,
pădure...
Trăim vremuri dure :
Tu îți pierzi frunza
prin brume,
Eu îmi pierd Muza prin lume ;;;
─ O
forest, forest, hard our days:
You lose your leaves beneath the
rime,
I lose my Muse along my ways,
Both stripped by frost
and passing time;;;
Ce
este mai trist pe lume...
Ca pădurea fără frunză,
Ca un
om fără de glume,
Și poetu fără Muză ?
What
could be sadder now to see:
A forest stripped of every leaf,
A
man whose laughter ceased to be,
A poet whose Muse is lost in
grief?
Târziu,
Toamna, printre brume,
A-nflorit un t r a n d a f i r ;
Ce
dorește oare-a-mi spune?
Tare-aș vrea să mă inspir !...
Late
in Autumn, through the rime,
One lone rose begins to
flower;
What would it tell me at this time?
How I long to
catch its power!...
Îmi
zâmbește-o floare
Ascunsă-ntre file |*|
În prima
scriSoare,
Din prima iubire !
A
flower smiles from pages pressed,
Where long ago it came to
rest;
Within the first love-letter there,
My first love
sent with tender care!
Parcă
văd floarea mișcând,
Nici de ploaie, nici de vânt ;
O
bate, oare, vreun gând ?
De ce nu-l pune-n cuvânt ?
I
seem to see the flower sway,
Though neither rain nor wind is
near;
Does some thought stir its heart today?
Why will it
not in words appear?
Îți
recitam poezii...
În serile Primăverii;
Le-aud, ecouri
târzii,
Vibrând liniștea tăcerii...
I
recited verses clear
On evenings of our Springtime fair;
Now
distant echoes reach my ear
And make the silence tremble
there...
File
galbene de vreme
Mai păstrează poezii
Când iubirea de
devreme
Aprindea stele făclii ***
The
yellow pages worn by time
Still guard the poems of the
past,
When early love, in golden prime,
Lit stars as
torches that would last...
Privind
la scrisoarea arsă
Din inima ei de foc . . .
Mă miră
vremea întoarsă;
Noi vream s-o ținem în loc.
I
gaze upon the letter burned,
Once written by her heart of
fire;
And marvel: Time itself has turned—
The Time we
wished to halt entire.
Mai
e o lacrimă uscată !,.
Plânsă odată pe-o scriSoare;
Semn
al iubirii de-altădată,
Din Primăvara trecătoare...
There's
still a tear, now dry and old,
Once wept upon a letter's line;
A
sign of bygone love, untold,
From fleeting Spring of olden
time...
Focuri
mocnite-n scrisori,
Peste veac se mai aprind ¡¡¡
Și,
luminând printre flori,
În brațe iar mă cuprind...
Old
letters, embers long concealed,
Across the years ignite once
more¡¡¡
Among the flowers, light revealed,
They clasp me
as they did before...
Dedicație
pe-o carte...
De demult și de departe...
Reaprinde,
printre rânduri,
O-mbrățișare de gânduri :::
A
dedication on a page,
From far away, another age,
Rekindles
softly, line by line,
A clasp of thoughts once yours and mine.
Stropi
de ploaie :
Lacrimi de nor ;
Gânduri pe-o foaie:
Lacrimi
de dor ...
The
drops of rain:
Tears of a cloud;
Thoughts born of
pain:
Longings aloud.
Gânduri,
stângaci așternute,
Pe un petec de hârtie,
Peste ani
rămase mute,
Dau miraj de nostalgie ...
Thoughts
so awkwardly laid down,
On a scrap of paper frail,
Mute for
years, they gather round,
Weaving nostalgia’s veil...
Zboară
din suflet spre minte
Gânduri care torc cuvinte...
Amintirea
tinereții-i
Fir de timp pe fusu vieții...
From
my soul to mind they glide,
Thoughts that spin the words
inside;
Memory of youth—a thread,
Round life's spindle
softly spread...
Gândurile-mi
se rezumă
La miraj de poezie ...
Ca un trandafir sub
brumă,
Visând iubirea târzie ...
My
thoughts now gather, more and more,
Around poetry’s
mirage;
Like a rose beneath frost’s hoar,
Dreaming love
in later age...
Trăiesc
pe firu-amintirii,
Pe aripa poeziei,
İubirea
iubirii,
Bucuria bucuriei...
On
memory's thin thread I stay,
On poetry's light, soaring
wing,
The love of love along the way,
The joy of joy in
everything...
Oprit
din mersu-mi înainte,
Încerc gânduri să adun
Din
imagini și cuvinte
Ce le-am risipit pe drum...
Now
halted from my forward pace,
I try to gather thoughts I
find
From words and images I trace,
Which on the road I
left behind...
În
ziua-mi ajunsă-n chindie
M-am reîndrăgostit de poezie;
Să-mi
lumineze asfințirea,
Să-mi reînvie iubirea...
Now
that my day has reached its evening hue,
I fall in love with
poetry anew;
To light my sunset from above,
And wake again
my sleeping love...
Cânt
a vieții nostalgie,
Viață care nu se-ntoarce,
Amintiri...
prin poezie,
Cât al vieții fir se toarce...
I
sing life’s wistful elegy,
For life that never comes
again;
Memories breathe through poetry,
While life keeps
spinning out its skein...
S-a
făcut aproape seară
Până să-mi termin catrenu ;
‒ De
ce nu oprești ca trenu,
Timp Rapid fără de gară ?
Before
I finish this quatrain,
Evening time has almost come;
‒
Why not stop, as does a train,
Speeding Time, with station none?
De
ce nu-s și eu ca frunza ?
Târziu, Toamna, după brume,
Să
mă retransforme Muza
Ca să plec dansând din lume...
Why
can I not be like the leaf,
Late in Autumn, after rime?
May
the Muse, to my relief,
Send me dancing out of time...
Mi-am
trăit Vara crescendo,
Ca - n Bolero de Ravél . . .
Din
Toamnă va fi morendo,
Stins ecou de menestrel . . .
I
lived my summer crescendo,
Like vivid Ravél’s Boléro;
Come
Autumn, it turns morendo—
A minstrel’s fading echo.
Boleroul
lui Ravel →
Prin al Toamnei la pas mers,
Îmi oferă cânt
și vers;
Doar că îl ascult invers ←
Ravél’s
Boléro moves on →
Through Autumn, marching step by step;
It
brings me music, brings me verse,
Yet I hear it in reverse. ←
Zboară cuvinte din g â n d
Ca, toamna, frunzele-n vânt ;
Toate
lasă - n urma lor
Muguri pentru viitor ...
Words
fly outward from the mind,
Like autumn leaves upon the wind;
Yet
every leaf that drifts away,
Leaves buds to greet a future
day...
Gându,
cuvântu, condeiu—
Cărămizi de poezie …
Iubirea,
rodirea, TE_IU— (TE_Iubesc)
Cărămizi de veșnicie ...
Thought,
word, and the pen anew—
Bricks of poetry they make…
Love,
fruition, I LOVE YOU—
Eternity's bricks we take...
Poezia-ascunde-n
ea
Un cântec necântat încă;
Mugure, iarna, sub nea
,
Vis de floare-n noaptea-adâncă...
Poetry
hides in its flow…
A song not shown in the light;
A
bud, in winter, under snow,
A dream of flower in deep
night...

GLOSAR / GLOSSARY
Acestor Anotimpuri le sunt dedicate volumele de catrene LUNAtica IUBIRE, MIRABILA RODIRE, NOSTALGICA DESFRUNZIRE (posted on https://anitescu.blogspot.com/) și ALBA-NEAGRA-NTROIENIRE (in work).
1 The Life Seasons—Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter (capitalized)—represent Love, Fruiting, Unleafing, and Snowfall, respectively. 4 The Fairy QUEEN OF THE NIGHT from LUNAtic LOVE.
5 Benevolent female figures from Romanian folk mythology, especially embodiments of goodness and beauty; figuratively, very beautiful young women. Here the word also echoes ELE (“THEM”), the beloved women of long ago.
6 După Mihai Eminescu, „La steaua”.
6 After Mihai Eminescu, “La steaua”.

15 “Seas of Lethe” has a classical resonance: in Greek mythology, Lethe was the river of oblivion.
16 După Mihai Eminescu, „Revedere”.
16 After Mihai Eminescu, “Revedere”.
17 Romanian intertwines ROD—fruit, yield, fulfilment—with DOR—longing—then turns rod into the verb mă rod, “they gnaw at me.” English cannot reproduce all three meanings with the same reversed letters.
