NOSTALGICA DESFRUNZIRE / NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING (C II-3)

NOSTALGICA DESFRUNZIRE

NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING

A-ți aminti, TOAMNA, înseamnă

a privi inima cum se desfrunzește,

lăsând Verile să cadă înapoi pe pământ.

To remember during AUTUMN

is to watch the heart unleaf,

letting the Summers fall back to earth.

Deci a venit şi toamna cu palele-i tristeţi
Şi curg încete frunze şi-s paşii mei înceţi,
Pe-arginturile minţii tresaltă întrebări,
Cum joacă pe icoană lumini de lumânări.

(N. Labiș)

And so arrived my Autumn, with its somber sighs…
The leaves slowly drift, as my own pacing dies;
Upon my silvered mind, questions start to flare,
Like candlelight dancing on icons in prayer.

    În TRECUT, sunt deprimat;
    În VIITOR, sunt stresat;
    Trăirea doar în PREZENT,
    E un dulce compliment.

PREFACE

NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING is the third volume in the PASSING SEASONS cycle, after LUNAtic LOVE (I) and THE WONDROUS PATH TO LIFE (II). The cycle will conclude with the volume CHIAROSCURO WINTERING (IV).

These quatrains confirm that NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING is neither simply a book about aging nor merely a book of memories. It is a poetic meditation on:

• the seasons as mirrors of inner life,

• the persistence of longing,

• the survival of love through memory, dreams, and reality,

• the tension between bodily decline and spiritual vitality,

• the wish to transform even mortality into beauty.

The poet does not merely endure Autumn; he learns to read life through it. Leaves, frost, dusk, snow, and the circling Earth become emblems of a consciousness that remains tender, alert, and imaginative even while approaching its final Season.

The author is continually drawn toward two worlds: toward what was—through longing, memory, and dreams—and toward what may come—through the anxieties and hope. Yet “carpe diem” repeatedly restores the balance:

        In the PAST, I am depressed;
        In the FUTURE, I am stressed;
        Living only in the PRESENT
        Is life’s sweetest compliment.

Nostalgic Unleafing evokes the bittersweet shedding of the past, much as trees shed their leaves in Autumn. It becomes a metaphor for passing time, memory, and the gentle ache of growing older. It also suggests a poetic parting: a reflection on what has been, what has been lost, and how transient moments are carried forward.

These quatrains envision the dimensions of memory and loss:

• The Autumnal Metaphor: falling leaves stand for vanished summers, youthful innocence, and the inevitable passage of time.

• Reflective Longing: the past is acknowledged without a desperate attempt to recreate it; instead, memory is contemplated in its quiet beauty.

• The Weight of Growth: sorrow and sweetness spring from the same root as the heart matures.

II-3. Iarnă în Toamnă

   II-3. Winter in Autumn

Era bine-n Primăvară
Cu speranța pentru Vară ...
Acum, Toamna, aștept Iarna
Care-mi va adânci rana .

Life was sweet in days of Spring,
Hoping for what Summer'd bring...
Now, in Autumn, Winter nears,
Deepening my wound and fears.

Mă-ntorc cu Terra spre feeric,

Spre Vara cu zâmbet de floare;

Mă-ntorc cu Terra spre-ntuneric,

Spre Noaptea İernii sub ninsoare...

With Terra I turn to magic light,
Toward Summer smiling like a flower;
With Terra I turn to Winter’s night,
Toward snow that veils the darkened hour...

De o vreme-i tot mai rece !

Doar cu timpu mă întrec :

Timpu  t r e c e ,,,

Și  eu  trec ...

Of late the air grows colder still;
With Time alone I race my track:
Time passes on against my will,
And I pass too—no turning back...

Mă învârt fără să știu

Ca  limba  de  la  ceas ;

Cât e-n Toamnă de târziu?

Cât din Toamnă-a mai rămas?

I spin in circles, unaware,
As clock-hands sweep the moments past;
How late in Autumn am I there?
How much of Autumn still will last?

Speranțe, șoapte, doruri, vise,

Mai luminează - n amintiri

Din Veri
2 cu iubiri, rodiri,

Spre İarna porților închise.

Hopes, whispers, longings, dreams still shine,
Through memories of Summers
2 old,
With love and fruitage once divine,
Toward Winter’s gates now shut and cold.

Nopți de veghe se tot țes

Și  zile  cu  Soare - n  dar:

Des, mai des, și tot mai des;

Rar, mai rar, și tot mai rar...

The nights of waking weave a steady thread,
Alongside days with gifts of golden Sun:
More often, more, and denser overhead;
More rare, more rare, until the thread is done...

Trece Toamna, vine İarna;

Timpu mi-adâncește rana,

Comițând o gravă faptă ‒

Se-ascunde de-o luptă dreaptă !¡

Autumn passes; Winter nears;
TIME keeps deepening my scar;
Guilty through the passing years—
It avoids an equal war!

Învins - am  timpu - n  Primăvară

Când clipa de iubire părea o veșnicie;

A fost o luptă dreaptă peste lunga Vară ...

Din Toamnă către İarnă, lupta e-o zădărnicie.

I conquered TIME in Spring’s bright glow,
When one love-moment seemed eternity;
Through Summer long, we met as equal foe—
From Autumn into Winter— it's just futility.

Am trecut zare cu zare ...

Spre zarea İernii cea mare !

Cu  cât  mai  departe  m e r g,

Zări  spre  Primăveri  se  șterg .

From verge to verge I made my way
Toward Winter’s vast horizon-line;
The farther on I go each day,
The Spring horizons fade from mine.

Mai rămân ca beat, vrăjit,

De  a  vieții  frumusețe ;

Când din vrajă-oi fi trezit,

Vine İarna să mă-nghețe.

Still I stand, enchanted, dazed,
By life’s beauty held in thrall;
When at last I wake amazed,
Winter comes to freeze it all.

– Cine, Doamne, e de vină

Că-i gata İarna să vină,

Ca să cearnă prin ninsoare

Doar tăcere și uitare ?

Who, O Lord, is there to blame
That Winter waits outside my door,
Sifting snow through silence’s frame,
And oblivion evermore?

Zboară frunze, rânduri-rânduri ...

Bate  vântu  lărgind  r a n a . . .

Și ascult, căzut pe gânduri,

Cântec trist ce-anunță İarna !

Leaves are flying, row on row...
Wind blows hard and widens pain...
Lost in thought, I listen low...
A song calling Winter’s reign.

Mai în derivă mi-e plutitu,

Ca  o  corabie  pe  ape ,,,

Tot mai departe-i răsăritu

Și-apusu e tot mai aproape ..

More and more adrift I glide,
Like a ship upon the sea;
Dawn recedes on every side,
Sunset draws more close to me..

Toamna și-apusu de Soare

Au  zâmbetu  colorat ;

E  un  dar  întârziat

La orice tristă plecare ?

Autumn and the setting Sun
Wear a smile of colored light;
Is this one last gift, when one
Sadly takes the road to night?

În a vieții asfințire,

Pacea - i  fără  biruință

Când a Toamnei desfrunzire

Se preschimbă - n suferință.

At life’s sunset, peace is vain,
No victory is ever won,
When Autumn’s unleafing brings pain,
And suffering has now begun.

Văd Soarele-n asfințit,

Cu  o  față  pesimistă ;

Mângâie  lumina-i  tristă

Al Toamne-i drum spre sfârșit.

I watch the Sun at set descend,
Its face grown wistful, overcast;
Its mournful light through shadows cast,
Caresses Autumn toward its end.

Trist e Soarele tomnatic!

Trist e omu singuratic!

Tristă-i Luna printre nori!

Triști-s  anii  trecători ...!

Sad is Autumn’s Sun on high!
Sad the lonely man below!
Sad is Luna in clouded sky!
Sad the passing years that go...!

S-au dus zilele senine...

Au  venit  cele  cu  ploi,,,

În lumini tot mai puține,

Și îngerii-mi par strigoi !?

The sunny days have passed away...
The rainy ones have come instead;
As light grows scarcer day by day,
My angels seem like ghosts of dread!

Luna tristă-mi dă fiori !!!

Și-un Soare trist, la apus,

E ca-ntr-un vis stins în zori,

C-o  Lumină  ce  s-a  dus ...

Sad Luna sends a strange soft chill!
Sad Sun fades toward the night's hill;
Like dreams that die when mornings rise,
With light that leaves our darkened eyes...

Ce este mai trist pe lume:

Soarele  la  asfințit,

Frământarea mării-n spume,

Sufletu  de  dor  rănit ???

What can be sadder in this life?:
The Sun sinking at day’s end,
The sea in foam and restless strife,
A soul that longing cannot mend???

Mă dor florile sub brumă,

Mă dor păsări în lung zbor,

Mă doare gându din urmă

Încărcat  de - atâta  dor ..!

I ache for flowers beneath the rime,
I ache for birds in distant flight,
I ache for final thoughts through time,
So heavy with longing in the night..!

S-au gătit de sărbătoare

Frunzele din astă toamnă;

În  strai  colorat  de  Soare

Zboară-n ultim dans spre iarnă.

Arrayed for holiday and cheer,
The leaves of Autumn dressed so bright;
In garments spun from sunrays clear,
They dance to Winter in their flight.

Mă-ntristez la înserare

De-o noapte fără visare !

Prin Toamnă o simt în față,

İarna cu ceață și gheață ●!!

At dusk I grow so full of care,
When night brings not a dream in sight;
Through Autumn I can feel, out there,
The fog and ice of Winter’s night.

Dansează frunzele-n brume !¡.

Și  fulgi  pe  frunze  murind ***

Ultim  dans  în  astă  lume,

Cu moartea pre moarte pășind...

The leaves dance on through frost and rime,
Snowflakes fall on leaves that die;
Their final dance in mortal time,
With death on death they step and fly...

În TRECUT, sunt deprimat;

În  VIITOR,  sunt  stresat;

Trăirea doar în PREZENT,

E  un  dulce  compliment .

In the PAST, I am depressed;
In the FUTURE, I am stressed;
Living only in the PRESENT
Is life’s sweetest compliment.

Trece romantica Toamnă...

Va  fi  İarnă  în  curând ;

Lăsând muguri noi pe ramuri,

Pleacă  frunzele  dansând ...

Romantic Autumn fades away...
And Winter will be coming soon;
New buds remain upon each spray,
While leaves depart in dancing tune...

Privesc păsări efemere

Cum se pierd în zare;

De azi va ploua tăcere,

Mâine va ninge uitare.

I watch the fleeting birds in flight
Till all are lost beyond my view;
Today, silence rains through night,
Tomorrow, forgetting snows anew.

‒ Florilor sub brumă grea,

A trecut și toamna voastră;

De  acum  voi  mai  vedea

Flori de gheață în fereastră***

Flowers bowed beneath the rime,
Your Autumn too has passed at last;
Now  from  this  point  on  in  time,
Frost-flowers fill my window-glass***

15 „Mările uitării” capătă prin „Seas of Lethe” o rezonanță clasică: în mitologia greacă, Lethe era râul uitării.

15 “Seas of Lethe” gives mările uitării a classical resonance: in Greek mythology, Lethe was the river of oblivion.

16 După Mihai Eminescu, „Revedere”.

16 After Mihai Eminescu, “Revedere”.

17 Româna împletește ROD—rod, roadă, împlinire—cu DOR—dor, tânjire—apoi transformă rod în verbul „mă rod”. Engleza nu poate reproduce toate cele trei sensuri prin aceleași litere inversate.

17 Romanian intertwines ROD—fruit, yield, fulfilment—with DOR—longing—then turns rod into the verb mă rod, “they gnaw at me.” English cannot reproduce all three meanings with the same reversed letters.
