NOSTALGICA DESFRUNZIRE
NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING
A-ți aminti, TOAMNA, înseamnă
a privi inima cum se desfrunzește,
lăsând Verile să cadă înapoi pe pământ.
To remember during AUTUMN
is to watch the heart unleaf,
letting the Summers fall back to earth.
Deci
a venit şi toamna cu palele-i tristeţi
Şi curg încete frunze
şi-s paşii mei înceţi,
Pe-arginturile minţii tresaltă
întrebări,
Cum joacă pe icoană lumini de lumânări.
(N. Labiș)
And
so arrived my Autumn, with its somber sighs…
The leaves slowly
drift, as my own pacing dies;
Upon my silvered mind, questions
start to flare,
Like candlelight dancing
on icons in prayer.
În TRECUT, sunt deprimat;
PREFACE
NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING is the third volume in the PASSING SEASONS cycle, after LUNAtic LOVE (I) and THE WONDROUS PATH TO LIFE (II). The cycle will conclude with the volume CHIAROSCURO WINTERING (IV).
These quatrains confirm that NOSTALGIC UNLEAFING is neither simply a book about aging nor merely a book of memories. It is a poetic meditation on:
• the seasons as mirrors of inner life,
• the persistence of longing,
• the survival of love through memory, dreams, and reality,
• the tension between bodily decline and spiritual vitality,
• the wish to transform even mortality into beauty.
The poet does not merely endure Autumn; he learns to read life through it. Leaves, frost, dusk, snow, and the circling Earth become emblems of a consciousness that remains tender, alert, and imaginative even while approaching its final Season.
The author is continually drawn toward two worlds: toward what was—through longing, memory, and dreams—and toward what may come—through the anxieties and hope. Yet “carpe diem” repeatedly restores the balance:
In the
PAST, I am depressed;
In the FUTURE, I am
stressed;
Living only in the PRESENT
Is life’s sweetest compliment.
Nostalgic Unleafing evokes the bittersweet shedding of the past, much as trees shed their leaves in Autumn. It becomes a metaphor for passing time, memory, and the gentle ache of growing older. It also suggests a poetic parting: a reflection on what has been, what has been lost, and how transient moments are carried forward.
These quatrains envision the dimensions of memory and loss:
• The Autumnal Metaphor: falling leaves stand for vanished summers, youthful innocence, and the inevitable passage of time.
• Reflective Longing: the past is acknowledged without a desperate attempt to recreate it; instead, memory is contemplated in its quiet beauty.
• The Weight of Growth: sorrow and sweetness spring from the same root as the heart matures.

1. Summer in Autumn
La-nceput Toamna-i ca Vara,
Cu fructe coapte-n lumină ¡¡¡
Umbra e încă puțină
Și încă-ntârzie seara...
At
start, Autumn is like Summer,
With fruits ripening in the
light;
Shadows are scarce with newcomer
While the evening
bites the night...
Din Verile2 cu de
toate,
Prin Toamna multicoloră,
Vin ecouri colorate
...
Făcând liniștea sonoră !¡
From
Summers2 rich in every hue,
Through Autumn’s
many-colored hour,
Bright echoes come, in colors too,
And
give the silence voice and power !¡
În Veri2
trecerea-i urcuș,
Ca S o a r e l e dimineții ¡
Vine
Toamna... și de-acuș,
Cobor înspre İarna vieții !
Through
Summers2, upward lies my way,
Like morning Sun that
climbs the sky;
Then Autumn comes—and from that day,
Toward
Winter of my life... go I!
Vine toamna pe
răzoare...
Ce rămâne dintr-o floare?
Nici parfum și
nici culoare;
V i s u v e r i i viitoare !
Now
autumn walks across the garden bed...
What lingers of the flower
in the frost?
Its fragrance gone, its vibrant colors dead;
A
dream of future summer, never lost !
Am trăit în Veri-minune,
În
toate-am pus pasiune;
În i u b i r e a Primăverii
Și-n
rodu_speranță-al Verii ¡
I
lived through Seasons
filled with wonder's gleam,
And poured my passion into every
dream;
Within the Springtime love that woke my soul,
And
Summer's hopeful fruit that made me whole.
Întorc la păsări
cântarea,
Zâmbesc la un câmp de flori;
Și din suflet
întristarea
Se risipește în zori ...
I give
back the song to the birds in the sky,
I smile at a meadow where
wild flowers rise;
And out of my spirit, the sorrows that
lie
Disperse in the light as the morning sunrise...
Tot mai văd, tot mai aud,
Tot
mai simt amoru crud,
Mă-mbată parfumu florii,
Și simt
gustu sărbătorii...
I still
can see, I still can hear,
I still can feel raw love’s old
fire;
The flower’s fragrance draws me near,
I taste again
the feast’s desire...
Înc-am simțurile toate
Ca
în suflet să dizolv
Naturale nestemate...
Setea vieții
s-o rezolv !
All my
senses still remain,
Nature’s jewels to distill
Deep
within my soul again—
Life’s great thirst I still can fill!
Fără de iubire,
Un zid
nu se ține;
Viața - mânăstire
Ar trece-n ruine11...
Without
love within the wall,
No wall can stand up secure;
Monastery-Life would fall
And lie in ruins evermore11...
Un suflet aprins
Nu poate
fi stins;
Își înalță zborul
Cât îl duce dorul ¡
A soul
once kindled, burning bright,
Can never be extinguished
quite;
It lifts its wings in upward flight,
As far as
longing gives it might!

Dorul r e z o n a n ț e i
C-o floare pe-o stâncă12

The
dream of hope still lingers near,
Though many years have come
and flown:
To hear a kindred echo clear,
From one lone
flower on a stone12!¡

dream, bring back her 4 smile tonight,
Her joyful
smile, so warm and bright;
That blissful smile I still
recall,
From love of life that crowned it all...
Toamna vine cu frig,
brume,
Vânt bate necontenit ;
Însă-n inimă rămâne
Focu
Verii, foc mocnit.
Autumn
comes with frost and chill,
Restless winds forever sweep;
Yet
within my heart burns still
Summer’s torch, smouldering deep.
– Târziu, Toamnă, îmi
brumezi
Trupu - mbătrânit !!!
Dar ai grijă să-mi
păstrezi
S u f l e t u întinerit ...
– Late
Autumn, with your frost you glaze
My aging body, cold and
bare!!!
But safely guard through all my days
My youthful
soul with tender care...
De-un timp tot rămân
uimit:
Sufletu - mi tânăr iubește
În trup ce se
desfrunzește
Tot mai mult spre asfințit !;¡.
I stand amazed, and wonder long :
My youthful soul still loves and
glows;
Within my unleafing body, song
Still rises as the
sunset grows !;¡.
Trupu îmi
îmbătrânește!
Sufletu-mi întinerește¡
Și,
miraculos, subtil,
Sunt și moș... sunt și copil !¡
My body
ages day by day!
My soul grows younger on its way!
By
subtle wonder, I’m beguiled,
I am an old man... and a child!¡
Crede lumea că-s bătrân

Dar eu tot tânăr rămân !
Când elanu mă
cuprinde,
Chiar și-un iepure pot prinde ¡!
The
world may think that I am old—
Yet I remain both young and

When my élan starts to flare,
I can even catch a

Mă privești, vezi

Freamătu i u b i r i i ! . .
You look
at me—can you still see
Age’s imprint left on me?
You
listen—can you hear somehow
Love’s trembling murmur even
now?...
– Dă-mi, Doamne, dacă se
poate,
Prin mărinimia milei,
Un vis luminos în
noapte,
Să-mi alunge noaptea zilei !..
– Grant
me, Lord, if it may be,
In boundless mercy, hear me pray,
A
shining dream to come to me,
And chase the darkness from my day

Prin mărinimia milei,
O iubire-n vis de

Să-mi alunge doru zilei !

me, Lord, if it may be,
In boundless mercy, hear me pray,
A
love in dreams to come to me,
And chase the longing from my day

Vine-n vis iubire nouă;
Cum să o aflu acum ?
E ascunsă-n stropi de rouă,
Ori e risipită - n f u m ?. .
New love
comes softly in a dream—
How shall I find it now, and
where?
Is it hidden in dew’s gleam,
Or scattered smoke
upon the air?...
Aceeași Lună,-același
Soare,
Dar alte stele căzătoare !!!
Același suflet de
copil,
În alt trup, tot mai fragil .
The same Luna, the same Sun,
But other shooting stars have spun !!!
The
same young soul of childhood days,
In a fragile frame now stays.
Stau de-un timp ca o
reptilă
Cu sânge rece la Soare;
Încălzit de vreo i d

Din vremuri de sărbătoare !?
Like a numb reptile, I...
Bask cold-blooded in the Sun,
Warmed by some old idyll high,
From days with the love's loose run!?
Încă nu-s nici orb,
Încă
nu-s nici surd,
Încă mai absorb
Al lumii absurd...
Not yet
blind, and not yet deaf,
Still I see and hear each word;
With
the breath that I have left,
I absorb the world's absurd.
Cât mai pot munții să-i
urc
Și-n mare să mă arunc,
Caut cărare peste zare...
La
Cer să cer îndurare ↑
I can
still climb mountains high
And dive into the wavy sea,
I
seek a path toward the sky,
To beg Heaven for mercy ↑
